Olivia is really, really pushing the boundaries with her behaviour.  I feel like I am on her case all the time.  I am working with her therapists to try to 'extinguish' the behaviours, but this is soooo hard.  I am constantly walking her back to her room, which I have to do whenever she scratches me (she does it a lot).  The last time she did it though (5 minutes ago), she actually showed some remorse.  I am quietly hopeful.

  1. I hope this has gotten better. It's always been very hard for me to deal with Janey being rough with me, because it's hard to deal calmly with someone hurting you. It is great that she showed remorse, though. That's a terrific sign, especially at age 4, which I think a lot of people think is the toughest age for autism of all.

  2. Suzanne! I never heard that age 4 is the toughest age - I am taking notes - seriously! :)

What a relief to find you ladies. I feel slightly less "in my own head" reading your blogs.

I will admit that as much as I don't want to, I get easily offended by my daughter being rough with me. I've told my husband that sometimes I think she does this intentionally - which is likely not the case, but when you are left to speculation, that can sometimes go in a bad direction. I agree with Suzanne, I think her showing remorse is a terrific sign! I have not seen my daughter do that ever after she has hurt someone.

Hang in there ladies, you all are doing a great job!

  3. Thank you for your comments. I am dealing with it ok, but I have now ordered some long sleeved 'industrial strength' Kevlar gloves! ha! I realised that to deal with her aggression I need to not show her that I care. She is now doing it to try to get a reaction from me and she gets one most of the time because it's really hard to not show that I am feeling pain. I will let you know how it goes. I was thinking I should learn to knit some and I can hand them out to her school teachers and her therapists! It's unbelievable how sharp her nails are, and how quickly she can strike.
